19 Blanchard, Helen Augusta
[br]b. 25 October 1840 Portland, Maine, USAd. 1922 USA[br]American inventor who made improvements in the sewing machine.[br]Blanchard was the daughter of a wealthy ship owner. She was said to have had inventive talents but seems to have had no technical training. She patented nothing until she was over 30, although that may have been due to shortage of funds. Inheriting the family wealth after the death of her father brought her talents out into the open. She moved to Boston, Massachusetts, and made and patented a number of mechanical devices to improve the sewing machine: these included the "over seaming" machine, a crochet attachment and methods of making knitwear. In 1881, with an unmarried sister, she founded the Blanchard Overseam Machine Company to exploit her sewing machine inventions. Her company seems to have prospered, for in 1891 she was said to own "great estates", a factory and many patent rights, the returns from which made her a wealthy woman. Patents for sewing machine improvements and attachments continued to flow until 1915. She suffered a stroke in 1916, and died six years later; no will was ever probated, so the fate of her wealth can only be surmised.[br]Further ReadingA.Stanley, 1993, Mothers and Daughters of Invention, Meruchen, NJ: Scarecrow Press, pp. 518–21.LRDBiographical history of technology > Blanchard, Helen Augusta

разг.1) (очень дружны, неразлучны; в тесной дружбе) they are bosom friends; they can't be parted for worlds; nothing can part them; they stick together; cf. they are thick as thievesИ такая у газетчика с читателем дружба завелась, что и водой их не разольёшь. (М. Салтыков-Щедрин, Обманщик-газетчик и легковерный читатель) — The newsman and the reader came to be such friends that they couldn't be parted for worlds.
- Дружки! - ясно сказала в тёмном углу Аграфёна. - Водой не разольёшь... Где место средь вас бабе-то? (В. Липатов, Деревенский детектив) — 'Bosom friends!' Agrafena said clearly from the dark corner. 'As thick as thieves you are. There's no place for a woman when you two get together.'
- Она, конечно, очень удивилась. Так всегда дружили, водой не разольёшь, а тут вдруг из-за пустяка повели себя как последние дикари... (В. Распутин, Что передать вороне?) — 'Naturally, she was very much surprised. Such good friends, it seemed nothing could ever part you, and suddenly getting at each other like savages over a trifle.'
2) ( тесно сцепились в драке) cf. you couldn't prick them apart with a hayfork- Я про себя, дорогие гражданы, скажу: вот мы с родным братом, с Петром, жили вместе. Ить не ужились! То бабы промеж себя заведутся, водой не разольёшь, за виски растягивали, то мы с Петром не заладим. (М. Шолохов, Поднятая целина) — 'I'll speak for myself, dear citizens. There was me and my own brother Pyotr, now, we used to live together. But we couldn't get on! Either the women would be flying at each other so you couldn't prick 'em apart with a hayfork, or Pyotr and me would be at it.'
